Sweet Dreams©
Sunlight, daylight, pray
light lasts as long as ever daytime may.
Sunbeams warm and keep my world safe - hold the night so well at bay.
With the evening comes a darkness not of night but dark of heart.
Weary, weary overtakes me. My spirit fails and falls apart.
My mind fights on to keep the light but tired, spirals down to sleep -
Into the chasm, gaping open, slimed and cold and dank and deep.
The dark dogs come with teeth and claws and howling, whining tear and snap.
Hide in corners, slink in shadows, catch the sleeper in the trap.
Following the dogs there come the birds with burning ember eyes.
Their webby wings like dry leaves rustle, chill wind echoes silent cries.
Slithering, sliding, snaking, crawling creatures small and cloaked in mould
Creep in bedclothes, creep in sleep-dreams; freeze the soul of dreamer cold.
Hell-fire furies, whirling, dancing join the massed and wriggling sight
Making long hours full of terrors - burning, ice-cold endless night.
Corrupt corruption, evils lurking, brought to life my soul to take.
I can only wait 'til morning - wait and wait the new daybreak.
With the sun a new day dawns and gone! All night things gone away.
Now it's light I laugh at demons - pray the sun will somehow stay.
Without the night, though, day can't be - so day and night and day speed past.
And bitter sweet, my own long wait for mortal peace to come at last.
