The Captain

The Naval CaptainThe Captain was almost god like - he was in command of the ship and its safety and all officers, warrant officers, men and Royal Marines were under his orders.

Those in command were accomplished seamen and good navigators. To learn his trade a Captain started life at the bottom in the lowest position as a Master's Mate or Midshipman and work his way up. After six years at sea he could sit a Lieutenants exam and if he passed he would be promoted to Lieutenant. As a Lieutenant he may distinguish himself in battle or some other way which would help him advance further in the service but he may also have help from a benefactor.

Having been promoted to Captain his advance would have relied on seniority.

Onboard ship the Captain lived alone and if he wished he could invite his officers to dine with him for some company.
