The First Lieutenant, nicknamed Jimmy the One, was second in command of the ship and should the Captain become unable to carry out his duties (through illness or death) the First Lieutenant would take over command.
The First Lieutenant had many responsibilities the day to day running of the ship to help in these duties he had the other Lieutenants, The Master, Gunner, Carpenter and Boatswain.
