The Sailmaker

The Sailmaker was appointed by warrant. His duties were to repair damaged canvas and make new sails from spare canvas carried onboard.

He also had the job of stitching a dead man into his hammock ready for his burial at sea.

The principal instrument of the Sailmaker was the palm and needle.
