The Master is the Senior Warrant officer; ‘Civilian Officers’, so called, because their jobs were essentially similar to those done ashore.
Standing Officers were the Warrant Officers who would remain with the ship in refit or would join the ship after she had been in the ordinary to get the main stores and the ship into some sort of order by the time the main body of the crew arrived.
The Standing Officers were the Gunner, Boatswain and Carpenter.
All warrant Officers had to be able to read write and have sufficient skills in arithmetic to enable them to keep their records up to date.
